SDS | Belden Industrial Solutions
Belden DeviceBus® Cables Are Designed In Accordance with the Smart Distributed System Physical Layer Specification
SDSThe Smart Distributed System (SDS) is a bus system that streamlines the installation process by utilizing interoperation of intelligent inputs and outputs. The basic benefits are enhanced diagnostics, robust signal transmission, improved device response time, and overall improved communication between devices. SDS is completely open, modular, and compatible with standard networks, I/O and many controllers. The network operates with standard industrial control computers, is easily upgradeable and because of its wiring method, is easy to install.

Smart Distributed SystemThe network can support up to 126 individually addressable devices on a single 4-wire cable. The SDS can be integrated with other control solutions by using other Controller Area Network (CAN) integrated circuits or off-the-shelf interface devices. CAN is a protocol that provides a method for both message checking and correction to ensure communication integrity and overall robustness. Characteristics of an SDS/CAN network include: ability to support up to 64 nodes at a selectable baud rate at 125, 250, 500 and 1,000kbps with a maximum network distance of 1,500 ft.

While the SDS components used provide the advanced diagnostic features, non-SDS devices can also be connected to the four-wire cable for communication and power.

DeviceBus Cables for SDS - Features and Benefits

Belden cables for SDS feature a data and power pair under the same overall rugged jacket. Each pair is shielded with a common overall drain wire for maximum signal integrity in noisy industrial environments. Key attributes include:

  • Data and power in one cable
  • Reduced cable and installation cost
  • Easily identified colored conductors
  • High performance
  • Low capacitance for long runs
  • Twisted and shielded for noise immunity
